Every Dog Has His Day Hank the Cowdog 10 John R Erickson Gerald L Holmes 9780877191506 Books Reviews
my grandson loves these books
This is the first book our 2nd/3rd/4th grade bookclub did. It is funny! The characters are colorful and the narration by Hank the Cowdog is clever and enjoyable to read. It is a light-hearted, fun read and we were able to have a great discussion if it.
it was a gift but very enjoyable.
The beggining of the story is about Hank doing patrol and he saw three pickups. Then there were two dogs Benny and Miss Scamper. But Hank was roped by a man who got the wrong dog.The rope broke when Hank tried to get Pete the cat. Then he tries to turn the cattle away which he was sucessful but when he entered the jungle the coyote brothers caught him. They made Hank to do the contest who can eat him or not. But turns out that Hank wins by his sleeping song with the help of a buzzard named Junior. So Hank tries to look for Loper but he is stuck in the quicksand but Hank rescued him by his rope. The end is when Hank and Drover went to sleep. The interesting part of the story is when the buzzards came and Drover is silly and the coyote brothers do a contest with Hank. I enjoyed the story because of the new characters.
Among his many other attributes, Hank the Cowdog has an uncanny ability to keep our entire family amused on long trips. Next to The Original Adventures of Hank The Cowdog (Vol. 1), this one is our favorite. Benny, the prize-winning cowdog-for-hire, very quickly gets under Hank's skin when he bumps Hank off the job of a roundup. Erickson's voicing of Benny is oddly reminiscent of William F. Buckley Jr., and works to great effect. Add the romantic element of Hank's love interest, Miss Beulah ("Mercy!", exclaims Hank) and the perceived threat Benny places there too, and the story becomes even more interesting. All against the regular backdrop of ranch life and supporting characters Drover, Plato, Loper and the rest of the gang, and the story is one of Hank's best romps. Enjoy!
It is round-up time again at the ranch and Hank figures he must do his duty, as he always dose, and run the operation. When Hank finds himself tied to a post and out of the way (Past books have let us know that Hank tends to `misunderstand' the concept of rounding up cattle, things start going down hill. One of the ranchers has brought a high priced cowdog to help and Hank is left out in the cold.
Will Hank be able to prove himself to the `Blue Ribbon' cowdog he knows he is. Will Hank be able to put the snotty high priced cowdog in his place? And what is Drover doing during all this and what does Pete the barn cat have to do with anything? And of course then there are the two buzzards.
This is a hilarious episode and one that should not be missed. You cannot help feel sorry for poor Hank from time to time...good grief, he tries so hard, yet all ends well and Hank overcomes all the obstacles placed in front of him.
The humor here is cutting and it can be enjoyed (along with the adventures) by both young and old alike. These are some of the most effective books I have found to draw the reluctant reader into the world of books.
This was a library find.
