Empire of the Senseless A Novel Kathy Acker 9780802131799 Books Reviews

I borrowed this book from a friend who said she had attempted to read it numerous times, but couldn't get past the first chapter. Once I started it, I could see why. Acker seemed more interested in shocking the reader than in making characters that a reader can care about. Half the time, I couldn't tell who was narrating, as the voice that was supposed to shift back and forth between two characters stayed exactly the same althroughout the book. It would have been super if she had been consistent with the gender pronouns, but as Acker stumbled between her characters, even she lost track of who was saying what. Neither of the main characters were likable, or even relatable, and the events through which they travel were so disjointed as to be gibberish. Yes, Acker had some fantastic ideas here, but the execution was deplorable and sloppy. Her use of profanity was so heavy-handed that the profanity itself lost its meaning, almost as though she threw in the random vulgarity of the day without any heed as to how it would benefit the story. This book was not the least bit entertaining, it did not challenge me to think of the world in a different way, nor did I learn anything from it. If you are looking for a read that will get you somewhere, look somewhere else.
Kathy Acker has more vision than talent. If you read "Empire of the Senseless," you're subjected to a seemingly endless series of images that range from the squalid to the nightmarish, composed with all the skill of a schizophrenic dictating her scattershot memoirs. By turns she is banal, scatological, grimly humorous, declamatory, and poetic.
However, for all its excesses, this book is frequently amazing. Acker puts her characters Abhor and Thivai in a post-apocalyptic world where abuse and defeat are par for the course, and shows their desperate search for a semblance of peace in a surprisingly humane light.
Kathy Acker does not write for the weak of heart, but "Empire of the Senseless" is brave in the face of futility and compassionate toward history's most helpless souls.
A heavy fog of a dream, punctuated by acts of violence, raw language, and humor - Kathy Acker's dystopia is an unflinching look at humanity from its lowest cesspool. Difficult to read at times, and the worst kind of book to read during a depression - Empire of the Senseless is still a brilliant book.
How do I describe this sci-fi/horror/sociological/scatological freak show of a novel? Well, if you're read the brilliant cyberpunk classic *Neuromancer*, you know the plot, more or less. *Empire ...* is part tribute to, part parody of Gibson's work. But let's say we were living in an alternative reality in which Gibson lost his only manuscript of *Neuromancer* before he could get it to the publisher, and who should find it but the crazy, mystical, beatnick author William Burroughs. Burroughs then says 'wow, this is quite a story, but I've got a better take on it,' drops some acid and gets right to work. Lets say, then has the worst bad trip of his of while writing. The result would look somethink life Acker's ultra-violent topsy-turvey future world in which France is a colony of Algeria, wars are fought with sound waves and burned out, amoral adventurers stride through the techno-babble wasteland of a doomed civilization in search of money, drugs, revenge and just to escape boredom.
Not her easiest book, but what i like about this one is that it is about empire and about information. Part of it is a reworking of William Gibson, which is where the problem of information comes from. How can writing struggle in and against a world of information? It turned out to be a prescient theme. Needless to say, the book is rather 'noisy'. It does not want to participate in the seamless transactional world of information, within which so-called 'literary fiction' got itself stuck.
love her ... a rarity, especially today ... brilliant and gifted individual ... blows the lid off of tradition!
